В один прекрасный момент Mageia стала виснуть при загрузки с жесткого диска:

В безопасном режиме без ACPI удается попасть в консоль

Как починить? На  ноуте стоит Mageia 4, исправит ли ситутация обновление до Mageia 5? Через chroot я способен обновиться, пакеты доустановить.

Попробовать загрузится с драйвером vesa (прописать в загрузчике xdriver=vesa ). Можно снести Xorg и перезагрузится.

Четвертая версия отлично работала, все устраивает. Если обновиться, то не факт, что все останется как было, обычно становится хуже: новые проблемы появляются, иногда да же вообще дистрибутив становится не работоспособным. Риск есть, перед обновлением всегда делаю резервную копию, но пока все скачается, пока копия резервная сделается, так 2 дня как миним уйдёт, а если обновления не понравятся так придётся откатывать - в итоге 2 уйдут в пустую.

Нет, это печальный опыт. "Сначало было плохо, потом вышло обновление и стало ещё хуже" Я не говорю что так всегда, но пару раз я обновился и потом врал на себе волосы из-за того что не сделал резервную копию.

Обновился до 5-й версии, проблема частично решилась. На ядре 3.14 не работает Nvidia (во время загрузки пытается собраться модуль ядра, но не может,) сырцы ядра стоят, модуль ядра для VirtualBox нормально собрался. Что делать не знаю, есть ли смысл попробовать поставить драйвера с оф. сайта?

Я при установке всегда ставлю проприетарные драйверы Nvidia, но никогда не обновляю систему до следующей версии, всегда ставлю заново

Но это же не Windows! Linux ставится только один раз, а потом только обновляется, если требует ситуация.

С Nvidia такое очень редко бывает - один раз и 1000, с радеоном намного чаще (от модели сильно зависит).
А что касается программок разных, то проблемы бывают типо моих с хромом, но решаются. Чаще бывает когда в новой версии программы разработчики сделали что-то, что не всем нравится, а старая версия на новый дистрибутив не ставится, но тут не угадать.

Тут меня смущает, то что у меня гибридная графика ( на стационарном компе то же всегда с оф. сайта ставлю), там не так просто все настроить.

Если  нет желания обновляться, отрежьте от диска десяток гигабайт и установите нужную систему "параллельно". Поработайте в ней, если все нормально, сделайте ее основной. Старую не удаляйте. Можно будет системы друг из друга ремонтировать, всегда под рукой есть рабочая система.

Это давно было, когда слово "перезагружаемся" в линукс было ругательным. А что сейчас...

В качестве резервной ОС у меня есть LiveCD мной подкорректированный, к тому же комп не один, сразу две на жестком диске держать нет смысла. Проверяю обычно на виртуальной машине. Резервную копию корневого раздела делаю, если что могу откатится всегда.

Кому как нравится. Я уже давно так делаю, мне так удобнее. Я всегда имею рабочую систему, бекапить корень на домашнем компе мне не нужно. Если бекаплю, то только данные.

подрубил репозитарий с Mageia 4, поставил от туда дрова на видюху и Nvidia заработала.
Обновил Chromium и он то же заработал. Chrome пока без изменений

А разве цикл поддержки Mageia 4 ещё не закончился и репозитории не отключены?

Поддержка закончилась, новые пакеты добавляться не будут, а отключать их не зачем, они же могут понадобиться тем кто не захотел обновляться или кому новые версии не нравятся и решил поставить старую. Не давно у знакомой на Mageia2 пакеты доустанавливал, все пакеты 2-й версии доступны.
